About Our Hotel

The La Coste City Hotel was built in 1912 to service the railroad. It provided overnight rooms and food for the public. In 1928 Gus and Margaret Mary, know as Maggie,  purchased the hotel and even though it was during prohibition, they allowed drinking and gambling in the back room.  This activity avoided police detection because of timely telephone calls. It is said that the beer and whiskey were made in a basement belonging to Gus'  brother. The hotel was known as "Kellers Place" and the sign currently hangs in the lounge. The bottle cap covered walls and ceiling were no rumor. This had originally started to hold up the sagging wall paper, it continued until some of the walls and ceiling were covered. Keller's Place remained open until Maggie passed 1976.

In 1980 it was converted to a bed and breakfast.  Operated by Jaye and Gene Sherrer, it was originally called the "City Hotel" until the couple found a sign at an antique auction that suited them better. The Swan and Railway Country Inn couple valued their privacy and therefore did not advertise. Clients were referred by the Castroville Chamber of Commerce and from past guests.

The "City Hotel" received its historical marker on Saturday, January 14, 1995, 2:00 PM.

Mission

The mission of The La Coste City Hotel is simple-

Preservation.

Although achieving this has not been simple, Rodney Hitzfelder and his son Andrew set their minds to the job. They did not want to see the hotel torn down so they hired a crew of amazing men and went to work. Between these hard working men and the help of family, The La Coste City Hotel has been born again.

Vision

The La Coste City Hotel's vision is to give our amazing town a place to call their own and a place to share with others. We want families to come to celebrate their special moments and people to come to relax and visit with friends. Being close to Castroville and San Antonio, we are striving to reach tourists that want to visit the city but want a hometown place to stay.
